The instruments I teach – piano, violin, viola, and cello – have a prep test which precedes the (ABRSM) graded exams of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
The prep test does not award any marks/points, but the examiner makes constructive comments on the performance of the candidate and a certificate is awarded to the candidate at the end of the test.
The prep test is available for piano, violin, viola and cello and lasts about 10 minutes. The candidate plays three tunes which are set by the Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music and a piece of their own choice. Each of which is made up of 16 to 24 bars so roughly equivalent to two to four lines of a poem or a nursery rhyme verse. These will have been prepared in advance of the prep test and then there are some listening games which round up the prep test.
A mark above 130 amounts to a distinction, a mark between 120 and 129 amounts to a merit and then 100 to 119 is a pass. The candidates prepare three pieces, each of which is marked out of 30 with a pass mark for each of 20. Scales and broken chords/arpeggios are prepared and marked out of 21 with a pass mark of 14, sight reading which is unprepared and candidates are given up to half a minute to look through a piece they have never seen before and is marked out of 21 with a pass mark of 14. Finally, aural tests of which there are four – clapping, singing, a major/minor test and questions on a piece played by the examiner (does it begin fast or slow, loud, or soft, does it go faster or slower at the end and so on) – are marked out of 18 with a pass mark of 12.
The ABRSM has written theory exams in addition to the practical exams. Again, these theory exams correspond with the numbering of the practical exam grades - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. However, ABRSM grade 5 theory needs to be passed in order to continue with practical grades 6, 7 and 8 in all instruments.
Outside the exam system, I also follow a structure of developing technique and musicianship according to repertoire enjoyed by the student. But I find that a knowledge of musical notation helps reading musical manuscript. Otherwise, it’s like trying to read words without knowing your alphabet!
I suggest we meet first to establish goals and suitability and then as appropriate establish a game plan. I charge £20 for half an hour and can give 30-, 45- and 60-minute lessons. I live in central Harrogate just off Cold Bath Road and it is disc parking which I can provide if required.
I’m 17 and I play the piano and have done for six years. I have been having lessons with Caroline for three years. I love playing songs and I can play by ear. I have learnt to read music with Caroline and she is very patient. She is a happy person.

I am 56 years old and have been playing the piano on and off for many years. I have a half hour weekly lesson with Caroline. I want to consolidate what I know instinctively and to
read music more fluently. I am now understanding how chords work through playing arpeggios. I want to have fun in playing the piano and Caroline is an enthusiastic, fun and
happy teacher.

I’m 18 and I play the piano, and trumpet and have done so for 10 years. Caroline accompanied me when I was asked to attend an audition for the National Children’s Orchestra 5 years ago. She was a great mentor and a support that took all my butterflies away! Thank you.
