I teach the piano, violin, viola and cello to children and adults of all ages and abilities. I also teach theory (theory covers the essential building blocks of music, including the basics of rhythm and harmony, counterpoint, composition and a broad knowledge of western music and aural (listening and singing or playing back a melody without written music, identifying pitch intervals, chords, rhythms, and time from hearing only, recognising musical elements of a piece from hearing only, matching pitch and intonation effectively, identifying important performance information and stylings from listening and hearing the quality of sound (timbre) of different instruments).
My musical history – I began to play the violin and piano when I was 5. I had lovely lessons with delightful teachers through primary school. During secondary school I attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department in London on a weekly basis. I had individual violin and piano lessons and small group classes in both theory and general musicianship, string quartet, piano trio, and orchestras. I also had a few lessons with Eta Cohen in Leeds in my final year at school.
I studied at The Queen’s College, Oxford University, the same college as Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson), where I read music and was instrumental scholar.
I am an Associate of the Royal College of Music with a teaching diploma and a performance diploma in piano awarded by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
I believe that in understanding what students want to achieve, collaboratively we can create fun and engaging plans. Whether it be following an exam structure or learning on a more informal basis, I endeavour to accommodate all aims and ambitions. I strive to assist my students to become the best version of their musical selves.
The ABRSM holds performance exams “to learners of any age and you can start with any grade (if) you want to. We’ve designed them to inspire and challenge and to recognise and celebrate progress. Working towards a Performance Grade encourages learners to develop their performance skills and get the most from their music making.” (quoted from the ABRSM website dated March 2024).
